Europe is at a crossroads on climate change policies, and so is Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU), defined as all innovative industrial processes aiming to capture CO2 from flue gases or from the air and transform it into products such as synthetic fuels, chemicals and building materials.

CCU is high on the EU agenda, with proposed legislations aiming to reduce Europe’s CO2 emissions by 55% by 2030 (‘Fit-for-55’) now under discussion: they will directly impact CCU deployment, from its definition in current laws (e.g. current directive on renewable energy – REDII, EU taxonomy) and promotion as a means to reduce emissions from industries via new targets and quotas (future EU directive on renewable energy – REDIII, FuelEU Maritime, ReFuelEU Aviation) to the way CCU products are exempted in the Energy Taxation Directive and incentivised via ETS emissions mechanisms and carbon removal certifications. All those initiatives and instruments will be impacting directly the way that CCU projects can be deployed across Europe.

In this session, hear from a panel of policy and technology experts in CCU pioneering biobased CCU, biogas-biomethane CCU, industrial emissions CCU and waste-to-energy CCU as they discuss some of their flagship projects and provide an insight of future developments.

“Imagine we live in a sustainable world. A complete transition from fossil feedstock to circular feedstock: Mixed solid waste, plastic waste, bio-residues and crops. Our trash is efficiently collected and processed.

Our land is organized to maximize sustainable biomass production, so in full harmony with the needs of all inhabitants (animals and people): For living space, shelter, leisure, food, materials, fertilizer and fuel, all while enjoying the sun as primary energy source. No more greenhouse gases build-up, no more global warming, only incidental storms, fires and floods. Just imagine…”  Marijn Rikers

Marijn Rijkers will take us on a journey to illustrate how we can realize this imagined world, what are the key factors and considerations, what and where are the trade-offs, the gains, the investments needed to scale-up biobased so that we get to that magical point where we are looking back over our shoulders at the fossil past and surveying ahead of us a resplendent green landscape of the circular, renewable biosociety.

Héloïse Even and Willem Sederel will share with us their visions, strategies, initiatives and achievements to advance and develop the bioeconomy in the Regions.

Hydrothermal Gasification is a virtuous technology for almost completely treating and recovering wet organic waste using the water vector as the reaction medium.
It makes it possible to produce synthetic methane that can be injected into the network and to recover water and metals as well as nitrogen and mineral salts (phosphorus, potassium, etc.) that can be transformed into fertilizer products.
This conference will present the state of the art of its development in Europe and the prospects for its forthcoming industrialization in France.

The renewable gas sectors have not finished surprising you...!

Whether a relative start up or an established industrial player, some of the front runners driving the biotransition will lay out their visions for industrializing biobased to achieve the global impact that is needed. All with innovative and specific platform technologies that take as their feedstocks, undervalued biomass co-products from wood processing or agriculture as well as captured biogenic C02 and bio-syngas, and transform them to arrive at fundamental biobased building-block chemicals, a point from where it is then possible to fan out over multiple applications and across a multiple range of industries. And this, oftentimes with improved or new performance characteristics that exceed current levels, generating higher value-add and even greater opportunity.

The construction and building material’s sector is responsible for around 40% of the world’s annual CO2 emissions breaking down into 30% being attributable to operational emissions and 10% to materials and construction processes.
But there is reason to feel positive. Within that 10%, biobased can play a significant role in emission reductions by substitution with low carbon materials but can also go one-step further by providing a sink to sequester carbon and the possibility for cascading reuse at the end of a building’s lifecycle. We will gain insights in this session into the arrival of some market firsts, such as:
versatile, high-performance biobased insulation materials
- bioconcrete with biochar additives to sequester carbon
- door and window frames with top class energy-savings employing a biobased foam as single structural and functional material, thus acting as a thermal, acoustic and moisture barrier
- the first high-performance, healthy plant-based resin available on a large scale that is the critical ingredient in manufacture of the first eco-responsible MDF panel
hemp for high-performance insulation materials
…. and all at the point of industrialised scale-up or, already in the process of.

Pyrogenic Carbon Capture and Storage (PyCCS) is a key technology for limiting climate change. It enables the capture and sequestration of atmospheric carbon through the carbonisation of biomass.

PyCCS permits the recycling of practically all biogenic carbon (biomass), transferring it into a stable form and turning it into a valuable product (biochar) with an existing and fast-growing market.

In this session, you will learn about growth trends of the biochar market. In order to keep up current growth rates, scaling of the industry as a whole as well as of single actors in the field has to be ensured. The session will shed a light on how this scaling can be realised from the sourcing of input materials to the increase of systems in size as in numbers.
