For more than 30 years, Lucia has been active in the strategic definition and implementation of projects that promote sustainable development of communities, paying attention to the people and the environment in which they live.
Since 2007 she has been active in some African countries for the introduction of biochar systems and in carrying out small-scale demonstration projects that translate scientific knowledge into good practices, according to a systemic approach that goes from the identification of waste biomass, the introduction of the appropriate pyrolytic technology, the production and application of biochar. She’s been dealing with every aspect of the supply chain, identifying the most promising balances that allow the systems to be maintained over time contexts with scarce availability of resources, where low-tech solutions have a greater chance to "survive" over time, and where the human factor is key to ensure sustainability. In 2023 she founded a start-up in Burundi for the local production and distribution of ELSA stoves and biochar. Lucia has been serving the Board of IBI since 2019, and she joined the Board of the Italian biochar association ICHAR in 2022. Since January 2024 she is serving IBI as Chair.

Élimination du carbone en Afrique : normes, traçabilité et intégrité des marchés

10h00  Le biochar est passé du statut de pratique de niche à celui de solution climatique et agricole déployable à grande échelle, et l’Afrique s’impose aujourd’hui comme l’un de ses terrains de développement les plus prometteurs. Cette table ronde examinera comment le déploiement du biochar s’est développé en Afrique et dans le monde, ce qu’il apporte déjà concrètement sur le terrain, et où se situent les prochaines véritables opportunités.

Avec une biomasse résiduelle abondante, un fort potentiel de substitution aux engrais de synthèse et un besoin critique de solutions de résilience climatique, l’Afrique dispose d’atouts structurels que peu de régions peuvent égaler. Des défis subsistent toutefois : accès limité au financement de projets, insuffisances d’infrastructures et risques liés à l’exécution. Comment lever ces freins ?

La croissance rapide du marché de l’élimination du carbone - portée par une demande accrue de solutions de captage durable et par un renforcement de l’intégrité des marchés - a donné une nouvelle visibilité et une crédibilité renforcée aux crédits carbone issus du biochar.

Les échanges seront animés par des entreprises à l’avant-garde de la certification des crédits carbone issus du biochar - CSI, Crystalchain et Puro.earth - qui expliqueront comment les projets, les standards, les acheteurs et les investisseurs créent de nouvelles voies pour permettre le passage à l’échelle des projets africains.

Cette discussion se concentrera sur ce qui fonctionne, ce qui fonctionne moins, et sur les conditions nécessaires pour saisir la prochaine vague d’opportunités.
