Joensuu Biocoal Ltd

Joensuu Biocoal Ltd is advancing the green transition in heavy industries by facilitating the replacement of fossil-based carbon with industrial-scale biocoal. Operated by the Taaleri Bioindustry team, Joensuu Biocoal is finalising the construction of Europe's largest industrial-scale torrefied biomass production facility in Finland, with an annual production capacity of 60,000 tonnes.

Biocoal serves as a ready-to-use alternative to fossil carbon in energy-intensive industries. It is produced through a thermal process known as torrefaction, where the biomass is heated in a low-oxygen atmosphere at temperatures of 300 °C - 400 °C. The technological core of the project is the patented NextFuel torrefaction reactor.

Biocoal can substitute fossil carbon in several processes and is a drop-in solution that has higher CV and bulk density than white pellets or biomass. The end products are briquettes with an energy density of 22-23 GJ per tonne, and further torrefied loose biocoal with a higher C-content. Biocoal offers a low-emission solution for the steel, cement, and power sectors, utilising only certified forest biomass as its raw material.
