Sistema.Bio

Kenya

Sistema.bio is a social enterprise that develops and distributes biodigester technology for smallholder farmers across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Their systems convert animal and organic waste into renewable biogas for cooking, heating, and farming activities, while also producing organic fertilizer that can improve soil health and agricultural productivity. The company combines technology, training, financing, and after-sales support to help farmers become more energy independent and sustainable.

Founded in Mexico in 2010, Sistema.bio now operates in more than 35 countries and has installed over 100,000 biodigester systems worldwide. Their work sits at the intersection of clean cooking, regenerative agriculture, climate action, and rural development, helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions while improving livelihoods and food security for farming communities.

The Story
Sistema.bio is a prefabricated hybrid reactor that can be installed easily and becomes a permanent piece of infrastructure for farmers to process the daily waste of a farm and livestock. This waste manure breaks down anaerobically, producing methane-rich biogas that can be used for providing clean cooking and thermal processes for the farm and household. Biogas flows to different points of use like cooking stoves, burners, etc. with a simple, long lasting gas line. The output of the digester is a powerful biofertilizer which is stored and applied in the fields as a substitute to chemical fertilizers.
Together with the technology package we provide our proven implementation methodology that guides the farmer identification, installation, training, and on-going monitoring and reporting of farmers in our program. Adherence to strict planning, implementation, and reporting is as important as the quality of the technology to ensure the success of the project and delivering high quality emissions reductions. We have created processes, a specialized data platform, certifications and many points of quality control to ensure high adoption rates and impact from each project.
