Descriptif / The Story
LanzaTech’s goal is to challenge and change the way the world uses carbon, enabling an economy where carbon is reused rather than wasted, skies and oceans are kept clean, and pollution becomes a thing of the past. LanzaTech’s scalable technology is designed to enable participants in many industries to reduce their carbon footprint and overall environmental impact profitably. LanzaTech is building a future where consumers are not dependent on virgin fossil feedstocks for everything in our daily lives.

Forging the way to a post pollution future, LanzaTech harnesses the power of nature to transform waste carbon emissions into the polymers which are the foundation of our carbon economy. Recycling above ground “waste” carbon to make running shoes, yoga pants, and jet fuels displaces virgin fossil fuels in our supply chain. As clean energy continues to decarbonize the power and transportation sectors, LanzaTech is focusing on where our carbon will come from in our every-day materials creating a solution to the just transition we need. LanzaTech’s first two commercial scale facilities have already offset the release of 150,000 metric tons of CO2 into the atmosphere while producing cleaner burning fuels and building blocks for today’s modern material needs. Additional plants are under construction globally

Europe is at a crossroads on climate change policies, and so is Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU), defined as all innovative industrial processes aiming to capture CO2 from flue gases or from the air and transform it into products such as synthetic fuels, chemicals and building materials.

CCU is high on the EU agenda, with proposed legislations aiming to reduce Europe’s CO2 emissions by 55% by 2030 (‘Fit-for-55’) now under discussion: they will directly impact CCU deployment, from its definition in current laws (e.g. current directive on renewable energy – REDII, EU taxonomy) and promotion as a means to reduce emissions from industries via new targets and quotas (future EU directive on renewable energy – REDIII, FuelEU Maritime, ReFuelEU Aviation) to the way CCU products are exempted in the Energy Taxation Directive and incentivised via ETS emissions mechanisms and carbon removal certifications. All those initiatives and instruments will be impacting directly the way that CCU projects can be deployed across Europe.

In this session, hear from a panel of policy and technology experts in CCU pioneering biobased CCU, biogas-biomethane CCU, industrial emissions CCU and waste-to-energy CCU as they discuss some of their flagship projects and provide an insight of future developments.
