Pyrogenic Carbon Capture and Storage (PyCCS) is a key technology for limiting climate change. It enables the capture and sequestration of atmospheric carbon through the carbonisation of biomass.

PyCCS permits the recycling of practically all biogenic carbon (biomass), transferring it into a stable form and turning it into a valuable product (biochar) with an existing and fast-growing market.

In this session, you will learn about growth trends of the biochar market. In order to keep up current growth rates, scaling of the industry as a whole as well as of single actors in the field has to be ensured. The session will shed a light on how this scaling can be realised from the sourcing of input materials to the increase of systems in size as in numbers.

The IPCC published two reports in 2018 and 2019 which identified the annual offset potential of biochar to be between ca. 1-2 billion tonnes of CO2, if the scaling-up of biochar were to meet its full potential on a global scale. This session looks into the evolving voluntary carbon markets and the role carbon credits play in advancing biochar.
