Biochar has emerged as the most mature and scalable solution for long term carbon dioxide removal (CDR), with a potential of gigatons of CDR per year.

The industry is at a crossroad, and it needs now to shift up a few gears if it wants to live up to its promise and to contribute significantly to the net-zero target in 2050.

In this session we will explore some of the critical questions facing the biochar industry:

• What is the long-term potential of biochar as a CDR solution? What are the most promising geographies and sources of feedstock?
• What is the current landscape of biochar industry?
• How to engage in a sustainable way the agri-supply chains, upstream for biomass supply and downstream for biochar usage?
• What are the business models with most potential to scale?
• What are the barriers that need to be overcome in the next few years?
• How to keep high integrity and trust in what is fundamentally a highly decentralized CDR model?
• Where do we see the industry 10 years from now?

Pyrogasification is a technology that valorizes various inputs, from biomass to non-recyclable solid waste, to produce renewable, low-carbon gases which, when injected into gas networks, can be stored and substituted for fossil gas in all its uses. Pyrogasification projects for the production of injected gas are integrated into local ecosystems and contribute to the transition and energy sovereignty of local areas, while at the same time creating new outlets with short circuits for the recovery of waste that is currently little or poorly recovered. Today, the sector is becoming industrialized!

This workshop will focus on the flexibility of the gas system to maximize the injection and use of renewable gas. In connection with the West Grid Synergy program, speakers will explore the various flexibility solutions distributed at different scales, from the biogas plant to the consumer, via the distribution and transmission networks. Interoperability and economic performance are at stake, for a rapid and sustainable energy transition.

Avec désormais près d’une cinquantaine de stations d’épuration qui produisent du biométhane à partir de leurs boues, les collectivités s’inscrivent pleinement  dans l’atteinte  l des objectifs de décarbonation et de développement durable de leur territoire grâce à leur propre infrastructure.
